Messy Negotiation Method for Parents

Karen has trained hundreds of attorneys and contracting officers through both the Air Force JAG Corps and the US Army JAG School at the University of Virginia Law School. And along the way, she realized that the same skills that she employs to get good business deals were the same skills she needed when faced with “negotiating” with her children, especially as they became tweens and teens. It can feel uncomfortable to consider interactions with your children as “negotiations”, but once you recognize that “negotiation” really just means finding agreement you can both live with, your whole mindset will change. From the MESSY Negotiation Method for Parents course, not only will you get better results, you will have better relationships using your negotiation skills. So we avoid them, which often makes the relationships more difficult. Usually, communication and conversation training focuses on what we should DO during these messy conversations. However, the heart of what makes these conversations so hard isn’t only your actions, it is your thinking and approach to the conversation itself. No method will magically eliminate the things that make these conversations difficult, but after the MESSY Conversations course, you’ll have the methodology to improve the outcomes and make future conversations easier to navigate, less stressful and more productive.
